Bill,
You suggest something very interesting here: That the "break in" occurs in
the player rather than the reed (or at least mostly in the player).
Although I don't notice that I'm doing anything differently when I play the
Legere, I'm actually more willing to accept that most of the change in sound
that occurs as I play it is in me, and not in the relatively "unmalleable"
material or dimensions of the Legere reed. (I'm already aware that I handle
tonguing a bit differently with the Legere -- "softer" contact with the
reed. "Normal" tonguing that's good on cane sounds a bit percussive to me on
the Legeres.)
Since I don't have anything coming up to play for for a while, I think I'm
going to lay the cane reeds aside and see what happens as I play my two
Legere's exclusively for a week.
