Subj: [kl] Jim Gillespie's C-T source
Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 18:40:17 -0500

As I promised, I emailed Jim Gillespie to ask him about the C-T sonata,
and he replied:

> My source is a handwritten ms. (the composer's?) in the Univ. of
> Calif.-Santa Cruz Library given to them by Rosario Mazzeo. In mm. 3 & 5
> of both the clarinet and piano parts, it is clearly written as
> C-natural (with a natural sign) both times in both parts.

The fact that he doesn't mention the later recurrence leads me to
suppose that a C# is written there.

I'll try (not *very* hard, probably:-) to find out where the Ricordi
C#'s came from -- I suppose I could ask Garbarino, if I can get in touch
with him.

Jim also said, and I think I agree (with the caveat I posted before,
that both solutions require careful balancing in order to work):

"...both C natural and C# can be accepted by the ear as correct."

Incidentally, Castelnuovo-Tedesco lived in LA for roughly the last 30
years of his life, and taught many famous film composers, including
Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams and Andre Previn. Apparently you can
hear his music on over 100 films:
