I agree with Ed. The felts are necessary to reduce noise and the slight
give allows for a swelling in the pads. Felts are easily replaced if they
become too hard. Generally I have found that felts work best when you use a
"half-moon" shape rather than a full disk. I think that over time you will
find that the cork will compress and become very hard and noisy.
The problem is finding good felt!!! I still have a few dark green , thin,
felt disks that Selmer made 20 years ago.I will send you a couple for your
own use, Walter.
