Subj: [kl] C-Tedesco question

Stephen Moore asks a good question about playing in a
competition; I remember reading in "The Clarinet"
about an East European student who's teacher was one
of the "basset clarinet" pioneers in the 60's/70's.
The student played the Mozart Concerto in a
competition, apparently very well and on an early
basset, but was disqualified because the judges felt
that he hadn't played on a clarinet!

However I think that as long as the C naturals don't
sound like wrong notes against the piano, these will
be small things in the comparative scheme of things in
the contest. Play really well in general and they
shouldn't matter. You might get a "who told you to
play them as C naturals?" question (I always tell my
students to blame me if that comes up in a master
class!).

This is different from an orchestra audition where
there are so few notes in the excerpts that every one
will really count. Watch out for the extra bar (or
not) in the Firebird Variation!
