Sue, the strength of the reed you are comfortable playing on says a lot more about the facing on your mouthpiece than it does about your embochure strength and/or development.

A 3 1/2 may feel like mush on one mouthpiece, and like a board on another. Closer facings require harder reeds, usually more advanced players use them as it provides more contraol, such as quick attacks and fast tonguing, as the reed tip has a much smaller distance to travel.
