First, IF the glass can be removed from the case, take it out and wash it in
dishwashing soap with a little clorine bleach in the water. Rinse in hot
water and let dry well before reinserting. That should take care of the
mold, which is *probably* the cause the black spot. If the glass won't come
out, try cleaning it with an alcohol prep pad, and spray the inside of the
case with Lysol. Let it completely dry, open to the air.

If the reed that has the black spot is still usable, soak it in hydrogen
peroxide for about 15 minutes and then in lukewarm water for 10, wipe dry
with a piece of paper towel. (If the black spot is still there, toss it.)

For reed cases, I'm not sure this is going to be helpful, because I don't
know if they're made any more. There was a young (I think) man on the list
2-3 years ago, named Harris. He made beautifully hand-crafted reed cases in
walnut and cherry, with glass plates inside, and the reed is hold in place
with little felt clips. Instead of a latch, as such, the case closes with a
pair of magnets. I have two. One holds six Bb clarinet reeds, three on
each side, and the other holds 5 Bb on one side and 4 bass on the other.
They fit nicely in a jacket pocket, but not in the old Selmer 9* double
case. As I said, beautifully made and functional. You might search the
archives for his name and reed cases and see if you can come up with an
address or email.

Good luck,

Jim Hobby
