This is a common question. Every adult whether returning or starting out
for the first time seems to be in a hurry to buy an instrument.

I suggest you go to a local music store and rent a clarinet (make sure it
is in good condition). Get an inexpensive, quality mouthpiece like a Fobes
Debut.

Play it for 3-6 months and take some lessons if possible. You will find
out if you want to continue and build some playing skills so that when you
are ready you can try out instruments yourself and choose the one you like
best.
