Subj: [kl] Writing for both Bb and C Clarinet?
Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 23:45:09 -0500

Hello, Klarinet List.

The other year ago I wrote a Sonata for Trumpet
and Piano, and first wrote it in C Score, as I always
do, but did so with the fingerings of a Bb Trumpet
in mind. It lays very comfortably on a Bb instru-
ment, especially the few trills, but after it was all
done, the Dedicatee told me that he only plays a
C Trumpet, but transposes very well.

Since my harmony is complex, and I publish
all my own music, I printed the Part Books with
the movements all in Bb, labeled as such at the top
of each page, and then enclosed the same move-
ments for C Trumpet, which were also labeled at
the top of each page. That was simple for me to
do, and works well. Many of the top best pro-
fessional Trumpeters play only the C Trumpet,
as it sounds brighter, while the masses play the
Bb models exclusively.

I now have been printing ALL my orchestral
and chamber Trumpet Works with the Part Books
in Both C and Bb.

Now you guys are telling me that the C Clarinet
is getting more literature. This begs the question:
Should I print my Clarinet Part Books in both C
and Bb, too? If it will get more performances, and
since it's not difficult for me to do, as my own
publisher, it wouldn't be a problem. The question
being, would it be practical to get more perfor-
mances, or just waste my time?
