Rob -

How does resting your horn on your knees "disrupt" your sound, unless you
are burying the bell between your knees? When you take even a small amount
of the horn's weight off your thumb it enables you to relax your right hand
somewhat. In my case, I carry very little of the horn's weight on my thumb,
thus making it possible for me to relieve any irritation of the arthritis in
my wrist and allows my right hand to play completely relaxed (almost). In
fact, my thumb's contact with the thumb rest serves more as a point of
reference for my hand than as a support.

Whatever it is doing, my technique has improved greatly in the past 5 years.
This in spite of a bad injury - nerve damage - to my right hand 4th & 5th
fingers. Of course, the fact that the nerves have grown back since the 1994
injury has helped a lot. For listers who have had or, God forbid, will have
nerve injuries to their hands, nerve damage can continue to repair itself
over a long period of time. Some medics on the list may dispute this, but I
only know that I continue to notice improvement.

Excuse the rambling,

Regards,

Gene N.

Subject: [kl] neckstrap predicament

Hey all--

I'm playing on a Vintage R-13 and every now and then my right hand gets
tired supporting the instrument. Sure, I could use my knees to hold up the
instrument, but I don't like disrupting my sound. I have a simple
neckstrap, but unfortunately, the strap's hole does not fit around my
awkward thumb rest. The thumb rest is adjustable with a simple screw
sticking out.

Does anyone have a suggestion for either a) how I can get the strap to work
with this or b) what kinds of neckstraps might work with this kind of rest?
I _KNOW_ the neckstrap industry is just SO lucrative and there are plenty of
different ones...oh gee, was that sarcasm?

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Rob
