Subj: RE: [kl] double- lipping -- overcoming the "pain" problem

I had played double-lip, at David Weber's insistence, since I was 12. I
did like the tone I produced and was able to stand up playing at my
lessons. However, one year at Oberlin we had a "contest" to see who
would win the chance to play the Copland Clarinet Concerto. I had been
practicing a lot, and I stood up to play the audition and did not have
enough stength to make it through without some squeeks, what with all
the bite marks and pain in my upper lip. I found out later that David
Weber always sat when he performed.
Shortly after I graduated from Oberlin, I switched to single lip on
my own. I was doubling on sax and flute, and it was just a lot easier to
play with single lip. That was back in 1971. Now-a-days I use a patch on
top of my mouthpiece which helps with keeping my teeth nicely cusioned
and slightly opening up my embochure for maximum relaxation. ANNIE
