Harold -

Use a lip protector to cushion your upper lip. I use soft plastic
protectors -upper and lower -made for me by my dentist. He took plaster
impressions to make correctly formed teeth covers. The material is the thin
plastic that dentists use for teeth whitening. I've used them for several
years now and they show now sign of wear. I rinse them in cold water after
each use and occasionally use a little tooth paste on them.

Your mention of the "tonal advantage that D/L players enjoy" really hit home
with me. I am a re-tread who returned to playing after a 40 year hiatus.
My teacher and I were working on some tone problems when as an experiment, I
switched to D/L and immediately my tone improved, and I haven't returned to
single lip since. After using D/L for about a month my tone had improved
from that of an amateur to a pretty good professional sound. In addition,
using D/L has greatly improved all aspects of my playing, except my
(hereditary ?) slow tongue. If I had discovered D/L 60 years ago, I "might
have been a contendah". Just kidding.

Hi Stacy. Thanks for your response. Although I don't use double-lip I am
aware of tonal advantages D/L players enjoy if they can only overcome the
attendant pain threshold involved . .Please send any info you have.
I have read your pice on live music problems in theatreland. Similar
problems exist here in Manchester, it seems to be an international
disease... Harold Troughton
