I've been having the same problems with some of my reeds and it all started
when I used one of the VanDoren reedholders with the charcoal in it. I now
take all my reeds out of the case when I get home from a rehearsal and let
them dry well before putting them back into the case. I also soak my
reedholders in a mild bleach solution about once a week.

Mold!! (Yuck)
Make sure that the reed holder gets washed out and disinfected
periodically. It can be difficult to get in the small grooves to get
everything that lives in there.

"I have a student that gets a black spot on the reed right in the middle!
I've given her my Vandoren reed holder with the charchol to try to
prevent, but she still gets the black spot. Does anyone have any
suggestions??=20"
