Music of J. S. Bach, P. D. Q. Bach, John LaMontaine, Oliver Nelson, and 10
members of the Washington Composers Forum.

Seattle's alternative chamber music group Quake, in conjunction
with the Washington Composers Forum, presents a look at "Variations." The
second performance of Quake's 2002-2003 season examines the form in
different ways through the music of Bach (J. S. and P. D. Q.), John
LaMontaine, Oliver Nelson, and a new piece written by 10 members of the
Washington Composers Forum.

For this performance, Quake issued a call for scores to the
Washington Composers Forum for variations based on a waltz by Anton
Diabelli, in the same way that Diabelli himself asked composers to each
write a variation on his waltz nearly 200 years ago. The result is an
engaging juxtaposition of styles and textures, including jazz, 12-tone,
Chant, New Age, and a good deal of humor from Gavin Borchert, Keith
Eisenbrey, Derek Healey, Melissa Maier, Douglas Palmer, Joseph Weisnewski,
Lynette Westendorf, Robert Henson, Meade Crane, and Sean Osborn.

Beginning the program is an improvisation based on J. S. Bach's
Prelude for 'Cello in C major, followed by Canonic Variations by John
LaMontaine. P. D. Q. Bach (the last and least of J. S. Bach's 30 children)
follows with the Erotica Variations, and a variation on Oliver Nelson's
Yearnin' rounds out the first half.

Quake's second season concludes on May 5 with "A Little S and M,"
a concert of Scandinavian and Mexican music. Quake includes current and
former members of such divergent groups as the Kronos Quartet, Metropolitan
Opera, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the "Jazz Talk" Octet, the University of
Washington faculty, and the rock band Relative Sight. Hailed in the Tacoma
Reporter for "...creating entirely new and amazing performance
experiences," Quake continues to engage audiences with its rich and varied
repertoire, superior musicianship, and sense of humor. The core members
are: Meade Crane - piano, Ella Marie Gray - violin, Walter Gray - 'cello,
Don Immel - trombone, Sean Osborn - clarinet, Susan Telford - flute, and
Rob Tucker - percussion. More information is available at quakemusic.org
