I have completed my month of independent work with the Legere. I then
switched back to Van Doren V12's for awhile.

Here is what I found out:

The Legere is a piece of magic. Set up right it plays the same every time.
It is very sensitive to placement, but once achieved, it is amazingly
consistent with wonderful note to tone uniformity and response in all
registers. I get more sound volume from the Legere. I had no problems with
warping, or any of the other issues mentioned at times on this listserve,
such as warping on intonation. What a delight.

While cane reeds tend to vary ocatave to octave, e.g., terrific in the
clarion, a bit tubby in the chalumeau, and strained in the altissimo -- and
they are high maintenance -- the exceptional cane reed still outperforms the
Legere. I get a somewhat sweeter tone from the cane; it is more mellow,
reedy, flute like. There is more texture to the sound. I seem to be able to
obtain greater subtly in my expression.

Right now, I plan to practice with the Legere and use it while giving
lessons. I then will try it in performance at some point. That will be the
ultimate test.
I would say this: I would prefer a concert band section of Legeres than cane
if they all played as well as the one I have.

But do I think they are quite ready for Carnegie Hall? I'm not quite sure.
Am I ready for Carnegie Hall? Of course, but as a member of the audience
anytime.
