Would it not be easier and more accurate to have your "model" reed scanned
for input?

I do a fair bit of 3D animation work and on occasion we are given
prototypes which we take and have laser scanned, we then take the data sets
and import them into our modeling/animation software. The density of the
datasets can be predetermined and the accuracy is much better than
mechanical measurement which we've found to be a sum of errors situation.
