This said -- which is wonderful information -- does anyone have
measurements of the different brand and model reeds.
I've been measuring my good reeds for a while using an old PerfectaReed
gauge, and am starting to come to the conclusion that it might be helpful in
selecting a particular brand reed by knowing their different dimensions.
For example, Oliveri Tempered reeds, for me, tend to be too heavy just below
the tip area, and Vandoren V-12 reeds sometimes seem too thin in the same
area. These of course, are way too vague comparisons. How wonderful it would
be to have a reed measurement standard to make comparisons.

This is actually what Guy Legere did when designing his reeds. He gave a
very interesting lecture on this at Clarinetfest 2000. One result of his
work was discovering that the profile is very similar for both hard and
soft reeds. The manufacturers do NOT scrape soft reeds thinner, as we do
when adjusting them, they make them out of less stiff parts of the cane.
No doubt there are some difference between the profiles used by
different makers, but within one make the profile was essentially the
same for different grades. So Legere reeds are made out of different
composition polymer for the different grades (or maybe the same grade
with different heat treatments, since you can soften them by heat
treatment).
So you must add another factor. In addition to shaping the reed
identically each time, you must set up a cane stiffness selector to be
sure you are using the same stiffness material. And since it is
anisotropic (and the lateral stiffness is influential on squeaks) you
need to measure this both along and across the grain. I have no idea to
what tolerance you need to measure this.

I would sure like to your point information. I have wanted to do that
for some time to see what kind of variations there are in reeds. Jack

Hello list,
At the time I´m redesingning my "personal clarinet" reed. I use a (cnc)
computer controlled milling machine. As anyone of you experienced
something in this field and can give me some advice? I want to make a
model of a reed out of brass to use it in a reed copy machine. I have
the whole surface of several reeds and have about 500 points in 1/100mm
and design a programm to mill the surface of the reed.
