Subj: [kl] Questions about Reinecke trio for pno/cl/hn
Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 03:11:40 -0500

I'm working on Reinecke's Op. 274 trio for pno/cl/hn and am wondering about
some of the performance indications, especially dynamic markings.
Throughout the work are sudden dynamic changes that don't make much sense in
current performance practice. Furthermore, articulation markings vary in
disturbing ways, even in the score.

I have both the Musica Rara and Western International Music editions, so I'm
aware of the part discrepancies in the former edition and the editor's
decisions in the latter edition. Furthermore, I know that late-19th-century
performance practice seemingly discouraged doing things the same way twice
within a performance.

My questions: Are the quirky dynamic changes and articulation markings
really Reinecke's, or are they someone else's? Have any of you seen the
autograph (assuming it still exists)? Have any of you had to address this
issue before in Reinecke? Do any of you know offhand whether other late
works of Reinecke have the same features?

I'd appreciate your help. As you can probably guess, I'm tempted to
disregard several of the markings.
