Ah, St. John's, a charming city! I remember fondly my trips to the
city while, as a student, I was working at the US Naval Station
Argentia (about 90 miles west). An impression that stuck with me
was the fiercely independent Newfie spirit: A Newfoundlander who
worked on the base told me once that he was taking his family on
holiday, "to Canada"!

I wish you could divert one of those blizzards to us. We haven't
seen any snow since before Christmas, so it looks like we're headed
for another year with far-below-normal snowpack and consequent
elevated risk of forest fires this summer. On the other hand,
I recall how it not only snowed a lot in Newfoundland, but it tended
to snow sideways: I looked out my tenth-floor window one morning
to see a snowdrift over the fourth floor! Then there was the time
I was snowed in at work for a couple of days, feasting on C-rations
that I suspect were WWII surplus. Maybe the sunny southwest isn't
so bad.

To return to the topic again briefly, this sounds like a book I'll
have to get. Does it go much into divining Mozart's use of the
basset notes?

Cheers,
--Joe
