I have noticed that spam seems to follow listserves. I am on two, including
this one. MSN has a nice feature where they sort mail with some algorithm
that looks at headers and determines whether the message is Spam. I look
through that folders, because sometimes they are wrong, but it is better
than nothing. Then I delete the entire contents in one fell swoop without
downloading the messages themselves.

AOL asks you to report spam. It also allows you to set up your e-mail so
that you accept messages from only addresses you have allowed. The problem
with this, of course, is that legitimate messages trying to get to you are
rejected.

Spam artists know all sorts of tricks to get around the best of defenses.
One approach on AOL I have thought of is to have three or four screen names
to test my theory about how spam migrates around. Until then, I plan to
simply delete it.
