I've seen gadgets called "telezappers" which theoretically remove your
number from telemarketers' call lists when you receive a call from them. I
have no idea how it works.

What works for me is that my telephone set, an old model, immediately routes
any calls which caller ID finds to be "blocked" or "unavailable" to my
answering machine. Since I'm usually at my computer and can see the screen,
I can pick up those calls which are legitimate (two friends of mine have
blocked numbers for good reasons.) For the most part, the telemarketers
disconnect as soon as they get the machine, and if a recorded message
starts, I can usually just pick up the handset and disconnect.

Now if I could find a spam-killer that didn't send half the posts from the
opera-l listserv to the spam file!
