Starting from the premise that a little apoplexy never caused irreparable
harm to a purist zealot (however ill conceived that notion might be), the
Mozart String Quartet in A Major, K.464, transposed and transcribed for
clarinet, has been uploaded to my Web site and is ready for your playing
pleasure. But all is not lost. If four A clarinetists play my edition, it
will sound just like the composer intended (differences in blowing and
bowing be damned). Better yet, an A clarinetist can play any of the four
parts with a string complement if your stringy friends use their published
edition of the quartet. Be forewarned that I converted all mid-measure
rests to 1st ending/2nd ending format so as to make it easier to define
playback (so don't start numbering the measures in the published version
because they'll be off after the first repeat. Do it only with a copy of
the downloaded edition in plain sight). I fiddled (if that is the right
metaphor for this story) with octaves for the 1st clarinet part for a
couple of months till everything began to sound halfway decent. There are
probably numerous problems with parts 2-4, but you can work with them in
your spare time. Thanks to my nephew, the KUSC program host, for having
made the string quartet version available to me.

That's the good news. The bad news is that the .MUS files are in Finale
2003 format. My nephew used PrintMusic 2000 to create the string quartet
edition so when he offered to e-mail me the files I had finally to bite the
bullet and to get an upgrade from Finale 3.7 to Finale 2003. Little solace
that he cannot now read MY files, because Coda Software in its infinite
wisdom does not allow a user to store files in the format of previous versions.

It is a thoroughly beguiling quartet. I played it with selected members of
the Oakhurst Occasional Chamber Players (those who agreed to indulge my
folly of playing the first violin part on the clarinet for a sight-read)
last week (see photo on my Web page). I think you'll all enjoy this
connoisseur's (as the program host likes to say) quartet.

My Web page address for you newcomers is

Happy playing all!

Oliver
