We had the pleasure last night of hearing Tow Puwalski perform the
evening concert at the West Coast Clarinet Congress here in Fresno, and
it was a gem of a performance. He really did do the Rigoletto Fantasia,
the Danzi Concert Variations on La ci darem la mano, and Rossini Intro,
Theme, and Variations, all before intermission, and did NOT require CPR.
However, he did perspire a bit. And he was fast - look out, Charlie
Neidich. Tom brings all the vivacity and affability to his playing that
is such a pleasure when you talk with him, too. The crowd was pretty
sparse, but at least a contingent from the Fresno Folklore Society was
there to eat up the Klezmer music which comprised the second half of his
program. Lot's of fun for all, and if you get a chance to catch him as
a touring Yamaha rep, don't miss it.
Gary Gray also performed the night before, and Marino Calva on Sunday.
I particularly enjoy sitting in on Prof. Gray's Master Classes - he's a
paragon of teaching, incisive, encouraging, and eloquent muscially and
pedagogically.
