I think that the point was that people are not consciously quitting directly
because of bad instruments, but instead because bad instruments (that they
are unaware of) are giving them the impression that they are bad or unable
to learn, no matter how hard they try, causing them to lose interest. I'm a
sophomore in college with a sibling and many friends still in high school
band, and I know a lot of people who have discontinued their musical
involvement based on what they perceive as inadequacy. I wouldn't be
surprised at all if the quality of their instruments had been holding them
back.
