I studied with Brian at the University of Michigan during the 1982-83
school year, though I was not a music major there. What I remember
best from the lessons is his insistence that I start learning how to
play musically--how to phrase--despite my demurral that I needed to
improve my technique first. My Rose etude books still have his
phrasing marks in them. I'm sorry to hear of his death.
