In my experience, $1000+ is starting to slip beyond the price range for a
"student" violin.
Especially when they also sell some for $99.

The discounters are attempting to fill a low-price nitch. Unfortunately,
they don't realize that no product actually exists that can FILL that
nitch! The Bundys, Vitos, Evettes, etc. are ALREADY about as low as you can
go and have acceptable quality.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
