I studied with Weber in grad school in the mid 80's. His was a very formal
and structured lesson, which I thought was very good. As Dan Leeson
mentioned, it consisted of warm ups, scales, (I recall Klose scales among
others) Kroepsch, etudes and studies including Rose, Labanchi. I do remember
that he would come back from his frequent trips to Paris with other scale or
etude books that he came across. (unfortunately, I don't recall the names of
many of them offhand). He played in the lessons most of the time. He did
work on solos and orchestral studies in our lessons. He stressed tone and
fundamentals. He recommended Vandoren mouthpieces and reeds (at that time
5RV lyre) Bonade ligature, Buffet clarinets. He often picked up new horns
for himself or students at the Buffet factory outside Paris. I recall I
played an A clarinet of his that was the best I have ever played. He was
often a very generous person, with time, knowledge and help. He was always
kind and supportive to me. There were times that he was known to display a
somewhat gruff manner and acidic wit. Some old timers around have some very
colorful stories about him. He was a very good teacher and I often look back
on those studies very fondly. It was wonderful to study with someone who is
a link to some of the legendary players and teachers of the past. I was very
happy to see that his recordings had been re-issued.
