He was partial to slow practicing of leaps of a 12th. One played the
low tone making a slow crescendo and then produced the note a 12th
higher with no discernable break. His weekly work generally consisted
of Kreopsch studies and scales. We rarely worked on repertoire unless
one asked for study of a particular piece.

He played in lessons and the character of his sound was beautiful.

I can't comment on what he was like as a person because our relationship
was that of teacher/pupil and somewhat formal. I liked him and I think
he liked me. That was about the extent of anything not having to do
with lessons. He wasn't fussy about my instrument but was so about the
mouthpiece, changing me to a Linx and Long mp.

Once he took me to a rehearsal of the Band of America conducted by Paul
Lavalle, and for which he was the E-flat clarinetist. I would see him
in this or that orchestra from time to time but he was a big chamber
music player.

I lost contact with him after 1958 but wrote to congratulate him on his
recent birthday (and having achieved the status of grand old man). He
called and we spent some time on the phone reminiscing. I did not think
he would have remembered me, but he did.
