Funny you should ask that. I did the trio in December, and am doing it again on 2/21 this year.
We never did dig up a trio recording, but I had vivid memories from years ago of playing the
chamber orchestra version. For some reason, the pianist was also quite well acquainted with the
orchestral version (and he's not a conductor). This helped greatly with integrating the themes
that are tossed around in this work. Naturally, much of the orchestra is handled by the piano,
and if you don't know the orchestral version, the piano part seems otherwise less alive,
practically one-dimensional. I recommend getting a copy of the chamber orchestra version in order
to get a complete sonic picture, even if you can't find a trio rendition. And take heart: the
clarinet part may seem like a bear in certain places, but pity the violinist throughout the suite.
Then again, justice can indeed be poetic: we're also doing Bartok Contrasts on our upcoming
program...
