If, by Middle German, you're suggesting an antiquated form of the word vs. a modern inflection,
I'm not aware of that etymology (which is not to suggest that it's untrue). As for multiple
references using the same spelling of the word, there is, of course, massive precedent for a
majority succumbing to a sheep mentality and following the herd rather than thinking for
themselves. Thus, I don't find that particular tack altogether compelling.

Both of the above cases are, regardless, purely academic (valid and interesting in their own
rights, but...), i.e., the focus of this discussion resides in gaining proof one way or the other
vis-a-vis which word ending Mozart used in the title of the piece in question. Dan Leeson, you
mentioned having a copy of the manuscript. If/when you happen to look at it next, perhaps you
could make a mental note to tell us how Mozart spelled it (?).
