The main purpose of a full Boehm clarinet was to allow the player to
have only 1 clarinet. In transposing material for A clarinet, the low
E-flat was needed since it corresponds to a low E on the A instrument.

You may or may not also have an articulated f#/g# mechanism and a left
hand g to b-flat ring. If you have three rings on the left hand, you
have the mechanism. Play g and raise the middle finger. You will get a
B-flat.

I'm confused when you say the bottom joint is made longer by the
articulated c#/g# mechanism because that addition should not affect the
length of the lower joint. However, the lower joint is inherently
longer because the instrument must descend to low E-flat. That is the
critical path to the length.
