To be precise, the source of the name Kegelstadt is one step away from
what is alleged to have occurred. The earliest statement about the trio
indicates that he wrote it "while bowling." Now that is a tough
statement to accept in any case, but it is perfectly possible to bowl
without being in a bowling alley.

The majority of contemporary scholarship discounts any association of
bowling with the creation of the work. Incidentally, somewhere around
the house I have copy of the autograph which lies in Paris at the
Bibliotheque Nationale.
