Good alto clarinet players are hard to find, though the question as to
why one needs them usually comes to play. Remember, the important thing
when looking back will be that you were there, not necessarily what
instrument you were playing. The alto got me to the MENC All-Eastern
band in my senior year and people tend not to care what I played so much
as the fact that I was there (scored BIG points for my band director with
the school board too). Who knows, you could even luck out and end up
with a solo (they ARE out there.) It was always my belief that I would
rather play a minor instrument in a major ensemble than a major
instrument in a minor ensemble. It may have been a bad way to look but
it never did me any harm. Best of luck to you in the auditions to come.
Wayne
