One other thing, I have the full score. If I were to take it and
completely write it out myself, and perform it with no admission or
donations, would that fall under the GATT laws of copyrights? I have
written all the parts out half way, and will continue to do so for my
own use. But unless it's illegal, we wont play it in public, we are just
South River High School in Edgewater Maryland. Please tell me if this is
still legal.

Peter and the Wolf is no longer in the public domain. The GATT (General
Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) treaty of 1998 (?) removed it and most
other 20th century Russian music from the public domain. You can no
longer buy the parts to Peter and the Wolf.

If you, or an orchestra you know, was fortunate to have bought the parts
to Peter and the Wolf, most Shostakovich symphonies, and a great deal of
other music by Prokofiev, prior to that enactment of the GATT date, you
are indeed lucky. If you didn't, you now have to pay rental. I believe
the U.S. agent for Peter and the Wolf is G. Schirmer.

About six months prior to the effective date of the GATT treaty both
Lucks and Kalmus sent out a notice to professional orchestras alerting
them to the fact that the music on a six page listing would no longer be
available or for sale after the effective date. Many orchestras
responded by madly buying up whatever was available.

Shortly after GATT, Schirmer let everybody know that the music was
available, but only for rent.

Even if you own the parts, you are responsible for paying the performing
royalties. And if you should to want to stage Peter and the Wolf with a
ballet company, you are responsible for what are known as "Grand Rights"
-- amounting to thousands of dollars.

If you or anybody you know owns parts to any Shostakovish or Prokofiev
works, treat them (the parts) like sacred documents. Once you lose
them,
they're gone for good!

It is a mess.
