Subj: [kl] Happy New Year / support music in the Community
Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 10:09:52 -0500

Hi everyone. I don't get to the list too often, but I
wanted to wish everyone a safe, prosperous, and
musically lucrative New Year.

I also wanted to take this time to encourage all of
you to dedicate some time to the community and to
children in 2003 and beyond. It doesn't take many
hours a week, to bring a smile to a child's face by
performing the Cat theme from "Peter and the Wolf" or
the clarinet solo of "Bolero" or even have children
create a language arts story to the second movement of
Stravinsky's "Three Pieces" Many schools are facing
severe cutbacks in the arts, especially music. There
are communities that lack teaching artists in their
after-school programs, or even organizations such as
ARTSTART (http://www.art-start.org)that provide
homeless children with musical, media, and other arts
opportunities.

This area of playing and presenting music may not be
the most financially rewarding, but the positive
difference you may make in a community or child is
immeasurable.

"Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art." - Charlie Parker
