I've heard it said that the clarinet is the wind instrument whose playing
approaches most closely the technique of singing (I've also heard opera
broadcasts in which the best, most musical "singing" came from the principal
clarinetist, but that's another issue...), and when I've attended vocal
master classes, I've often been struck at how much a teacher's technical
instruction on breathing sounds like something I've heard -- and heard --
and heard -- from clarinet teachers.

BTW, I read somewhere (but have not verified with her) that the wonderful
young soprano Christine Goerke started college as a clarinet performance
major.
