Next term I intend on joining the Western Oregon
Symphony at Western Oregon University, and I have been
working at preparing an audition for it. However, I
don't know exactly what to play.

When I asked I was told that there is no set audition,
I just need to find something to play for the
conductor that shows my abilities, etc. I would
assume that would be the standard technical excerpt
and a slower excerpt to show phrasing, shaping, etc.
As Steven Melillo told us my freshman year, "In still
waters little fish have no where to hide." Anyway, I
am currently considering playing the MENC
All-Northwest Honor Band clarinet audition. The
audition consists of the following:

1. Chromatic scale. Low E to G4 using eighth notes,
legato tongued ascending and slurred descending.
(Quarter note=m.m. 132)

Then from the Rubank Advanced Method for Clarinet,
Vol. 1:

2. Page 49. Last 21 measures. (Cut time half
note=m.m.96)

3. Page 53, No. 15. All. (Dotted quarter
note=m.m.76)

4. Page 31. Lines 3-6, top part, no repeats. (Quarter
note=m.m. 126)

5. Page 37, No. 16. Top part, first eight measures,
no repeat. (Quarter note=m.m.126)

Would this be suitable for the audition? I also have
the Rose 32 Etudes, but since I have never done an
audition like this before, I don't really know what to
do. I know I am probably stressing out over this more
than I need to as getting in won't be a difficulty
since there's only one clarinetist in the group, and
she refuses to play anything above second due to
limited range. I just want to give a good impression
as I want to try for the soloist position, which is
available. Any and all insight you can give me will
be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Joseph Stevens
