This is totally off-topic, but it's haunting me so badly that I must
'unload' it somewhere. Skip past this if you wish.....

I went to the doctor this morning. A young lad, perhaps 10 yrs old,
was sitting with his mother on the other side of the waiting room. He
was wearing a suit with white shirt and necktie and polished shoes.
Stone-faced. He was drawing on a pad, and I decided that he needed
some conversation.

"Would you like to show me your pictures?"

He looked at his mother, who was dressed in a business suit. She gave
him a big, warm smile and nodded 'yes'. So he marched across the room,
still stone faced.

His pictures were somewhere between stick figures and 3D art. Angels
in flight. Since we were in a doctor's office, I was a bit nervous;
but saying nothing would've been the worst thing of all.

"Angels! Those are good drawings. Christmas is almost here, isn't it?"

He looked across the room at his mother, and she gave him a pleased,
warm smile again. His face brightened a bit and his tone of voice to
relaxed a bit.

"We don't have Christmas," he replied.

(ooops) "Chanukah?"

"We don't have Chanukah."

"Oh, Kwanza, right?" (I should've realized this when I missed on
Christmas.)

He looked across the room at his mother again. She gave both him and me
another full and genuine-appearing smile.

Stone-faced again. "We don't have holidays. But I like music."

The nurse called my name before I was able to formulate a reply. I'll
never know the full story.
