A google search got me right back to sneezy (aka woodwind) with this article
scanned by Michael Bryant
http://www.woodwind.org/Databases/Logs/1998/05/000757.txt . It suggests
that Russell Howland and Hal Palmer came up with the term "clarinet choir",
(ca 1952) but that the concept and practice of large clarinet-only large
ensembles considerably predates this.

Can anyone tell me anything about Russell Howland? I understand that he
developed the idea of a clarinet choir about the same time that
Frederick Fennell developed the concept of the Wind Ensemble. ...
