Can anyone tell me anything about Russell Howland? I understand that he
developed the idea of a clarinet choir about the same time that
Frederick Fennell developed the concept of the Wind Ensemble. As I've
heard it, the Clar. Choir was intended to be only an academic/heuristic
tool for developing sound and technique and not originally intended as a
"legitimate" musical ensemble for performance, but it turned out so
great that it developed its own literature, much originally transcribed
by Howland, several of whom's arrangements I've recently had the
privilege of playing in performance in my first attempts on a
contra-alto. Great stuff. Any other information on him would be appreciated.
