Richard,

The pieces "Three Songs of Innocence" are very nice. I had a
voice teacher of mine do it on a recital, and I enjoyed it quite
a lot.

As far as NOT being atonal...well...

As my twentieth century composition teacher in college
says...it's not atonal, it is polytonal with the tonal centers
moving more rapidly that we are able to distinguish. It's
definitely not anything like pre 1900s music, but it is rather
pastorale.

Hope you like it. I think it would be great to program this
piece as long as you have some more upbeat things on the menu
for the recital.

You might also try the Schubert "Romanze" which is a Schubert
arrangement for clarinet, soprano, and piano, originally part of
a Schubert singspiel. The parts for all three participants are
VERY easy, the soprano part only goes to a top line F in the
staff. It is scored in such a way that a heavier soprano could
definitely pull it off easier than "Shepherd on the Rock". I
have performed this piece several times. It is on Oxford
University Press, and was at one point out of print, although I
have been told it is now back in print. There is a recording of
this piece with Judith Blegen singing, and Gervase DePeyer
playing clarinet (excuse the spelling...not at home, so I don't
have it in front of me.) If you look for the piece, the text for
the vocalist starts with "Ich schleiche bang und still" and the
CD it is on is Sony Label "Essential Classics" *Franz Schubert:
Lieder*. Here is the link to a yahoo shopping page with the CD
and cassette...
