I can understand why people pick on trumpets, bassoons, drums and
trumpets, but what is it about violas that attracts attention?

Because Violas are like the Alto Clarinet - a mistake ;) (it's said that
the Viola is acoustically a mistake)

The John Denver thing I would guess means to play it like you don't have a
care in the world.
