One more thing needs to be said here, and it's important:

**You** have thought out the details, Jeremy; but who's to say that some
person who lurks on the list has done the same? Or even knows enough
to figure them out for him/herself?

I can imagine some kid holding the marble over a flame simply because
it's faster (and more fun) than waiting for water to boil. "Hey! What
difference does it make how I get the marble hot? Just so long as it's
hot enough..." Or perhaps the kid *wants* a hotter marble because it
ought to be more fun to watch.... "Hey, can you melt a marble with a
bunsen burner....???.... well, now let's throw it in the water..."

The original message did not spell out such details, such as having the
cold water deep enough that glass doesn't fly out of the pan.... blah,
blah, blah.

So I felt (and still feel) that a follow-up comment was required.

Regards,
Bill
