I'm getting the next Steve Fox basset horn. After playing Dan's by his
kindness, I also chose the narrow-bore model. Steve is very
accommodating about keywork, to the extent of sizing and shaping the
keys to suit individual fingers. I'm having the thumbkeys arranged as on
Dan's (which is the same geometry but nicer work than on the Buffet
bass, so at least I remember what my thumb is doing). As Dan suggested
I'm having the low D on the right pinkie rather than left, next to the
F, and as usual an Eb next to the R pinkie E (all in fact the same as
the Buffet bass). On Steve's advice I'm having an alternate L pinkie G#,
but not a left pinkie low C; my L pinkie isn't too strong and low C is a
load of mechanism for it to slap down.

Can't wait till April when I get it!

I have three thumb keys on my Fox model, D, D-flat, and C, and out of
which I can't get much technique. I also have a low D in the left
pinky, but were I to do it again, I would probably have suggested the D
in the right pinky and a second low C in left pinky. There is also a
slight advantage in the older French basset horns because you could go
from a low E-flat to a low D-flat because the key for the second note
was right below the key for the first. But Steve may be thinking about
the mechanics of making such a system, and on that I can't comment.
