The left hand D is necessary as I found in playing the Gran Partita. In
the Minuet and Trio Movement, the 2nd basset plays the 8th note moving
line and the notes on the bottom go: ...Ab-F-Eb-D-Eb-F-G... and that
passage wouldn't be playable if the D wasn't on the left since there is
no low Eb on the left.=20

My instinct is that an alternate Ab/Eb is essential and a pinky D (LH)
desirable - or is it in practise not necessary?
