Dan,

I played the 2nd part, and it was funny because the clarinets all had to
audition for the parts if they wanted to play in it (no other section
had to!). Having said that, the first time I had actually picked up the
horn and played the excerpts (I had only tooted a few notes on the
stuffy one I had talked about a few years ago and had not actually
*played* it) was the morning of the audition! I was lucky to get a part
at all!=20

My favorite part is in the last movement Rondo with the 16th note
arpeggio under the 1st basset solo; it rocked on the concert! The first
time I played the Gran Partita a few years ago (with Dan's edition) was
on 2nd clarinet with my then teacher on 1st. I think I'm lucky to have
been able to play it twice already at age 23, I hope to play it again,
maybe on one of the 1st parts the next time!=20

And yes, now that I think of it, the mouthpiece being an alto makes a
lot of sense! I bet it was really fantastic to play with Mr. Combs, I
hope I have the opportunity to do the same!=20

I am delighted that you had such a wonderful experience with such a=20
magnificent composition. The mouthpiece you played on was, effectively,

an alto clarinet mouthpiece and the instrument itself was a wide bored=20
model. Buffet left the narrow bore model precisely because it was (when=20
made by them) characteristically stuffy, as you noted.

Did you play first or second, not that it matters? When I played the=20
work with Larry in Montreal, I was honored to play second to such an=20
artist as he.
