I just wanted to tell Dan that I was particularly excited to play=20
basset horn in his edition of the Gran Partita! We did it last month at=20
Northwestern with Dr. Thompson. The basset horns at school are these=20
beautiful creatures, Buffet Prestige models that are about 2 years old.
They=20
played so marvelously, I was so amazed because the one that I had tried=20
before was an older one and was quite stuffy. I think a big difference=20
was the mouthpiece, because the one I just described took a soprano=20
mouthpiece, and the one I played on at school took basset mouthpieces
(?)=20
and fit with alto sax reeds. The instrument does have this somewhat=20
unearthly sound, and we (the other basset player and I) received many=20
compliments! Larry Combs was at the performance and expressed his
enjoyment=20
of the performance to Dr. Thompson, and when she told me about it I was=20
happy to hear it of course, but glad that I didn't know he was there=20
until after the concert!

I'm also studying with Russell Dagon, who is a fantastic teacher and=20
can pick out the tiniest things that make a phrase breathe and phrase so

much better. He's just a great musician and it's such a privilege to=20
work with him! I feel my playing improve already.
