Klarinet Archive - Posting 000254.txt from 2002/12

This question has always interested me; I believe Dan
Leeson had an article published in "The Clarinet" on
this topic. I do recall places where the bass key did
not match the soprano clarinets, I think it was in "La
Boheme", and I wonder why if Bass clarinets in A were
so common that so many composers wrote for them (from
Wagner to Bartok, Puccini to Mahler), why are there
not more vintage "A" instruments floating around?
I did notice an ad I presume from Linnea Nereim, bass
clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra, in the second
last International Musician offering a bass in A for
sale.
