I've heard a lot, off the list too, about buying different barrels than
the ones that come with the clarinet? Why is this?

Sometimes a person will buy a different length of barrel in order to
adjust intonation --- similar to pulling the barrel out a bit. Since
you can't push a barrel "in", you may need to start with a shorter
barrel in the first pace.

Equally as important, barrels are available with different interior
shapes, and this affects tone.

Some (many?) performers carry several barrels in their bag in order to
accomodate different situations such as tuning pitch, tone desired, etc.
