David,

Klezmer music is music from Jewish litergy (prayers), Yiddish folk songs,
Yiddish-American theatre, Hassidic nigunim (wordless songs - when you
hear jewish people chanting "ai ai ai ai" or "oy oy oy oy" that's
generally a nigun) and similar things. It is not specific to the scales
upon which that music is played, though most klezmer is, in fact, modal
(as is much music of Eastern Europe and Eurasia, where the influences
between the Jews, Arabs, Turks, Gypsies, and Romanians (and others), upon
each other, were quite marked.

So I guess I'm confused about what you mean by "I've been playing klezmer
music for years without knowing it."
