Rebecca,

I don't know for certain which Telemann Sonata you're writing about, but it
sounds as if it might be the one that is, among other places, in the Rubank
Intermediate Solos for (insert name of instrument) that Voxman edited. These
are often used as teaching pieces and as audition pieces for school-level
bands and orchestras. It really depends on the level of playing that is
expected at your all-state audition. If it's a high school level competition
where there are other students playing Weber or Mozart or Brahms, the
Telemann I'm thinking of will not stand up in its difficulty level. If, on
the other hand, the Telemann is the level of piece you and your teacher
think is appropriate for this audition, I don't think the judges will
complain about the selection. After all, the point of the audition will be
to judge your performance level, not your philosophical approach to
programming or repertoire. Here in Pennsylvania, the solo is prescribed by
PMEA, so the students are all auditioning with the same material and don't
have to make any choices on their own.

Another consideration, though - is this an audition to get into an all-state
band or orchestra, or is it a competition to win a place in a solo concert
where you will actually play the piece you audition with? In the case of a
solo concert, I think it may be more critical for you to play repertoire
that is "legitimately" composed for clarinet, because at that point
programming considerations come into play, and it's very possible that
someone on the programming committee may agree that a Telemann Sonata that
has been transcribed for a dozen modern instruments (and may not have been
written originally for any of them) is not appropriate for the concert.

Best of luck, whatever piece you decide to play.
